FAQ

Questions people ask about the YKI test

Everything below is written by the team that builds our timed mock exams. Fees, dates and requirements are set by the Finnish National Agency for Education and by whichever authority asks for your certificate — always confirm the current details with them before you pay for anything.

The exam itself

What YKI is, how it is built and what the certificate says.

What is the YKI test?+

YKI (Yleiset kielitutkinnot) is Finland's National Certificate of Language Proficiency. It is a proficiency test rather than a course exam: it measures what you can do with the language in everyday and working life across four sections — speaking, writing, listening comprehension and reading comprehension.

Which YKI level should I take?+

There are three separate exams. Basic level reports skill levels 1–2 (A1–A2), intermediate reports 3–4 (B1–B2), and advanced reports 5–6 (C1–C2). Most people need intermediate. The exam only reports results inside its own band, so choosing too high or too low wastes the fee.

How is the YKI test scored?+

Each of the four sections is assessed separately by trained assessors and reported as its own skill level on the certificate. There is no single overall pass mark — the body asking for your certificate decides which sections and which level they require.

In which languages can I take YKI?+

Finnish and Swedish are offered most often, and English, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Sámi are also available. Availability varies by test date and centre.

Is there negative marking?+

No. A wrong answer is worth the same as a blank one, so you should answer every question even when you are guessing.

Registration, fees and dates

Booking a place, what it costs and how far ahead to plan.

How do I register for the YKI test?+

Registration happens in the official service at yki.opintopolku.fi during a fixed registration window for each test date. Popular Finnish intermediate dates in large cities can fill within hours of opening, so register the day the window opens.

How much does the YKI test cost?+

Around €130 for the basic and intermediate exams and around €180 for the advanced exam. Fees are set nationally and reviewed periodically — always confirm the current amount in the official registration service before paying.

Can I get a refund if I cannot attend?+

Generally no. The fee is tied to your place on a specific date. Read the cancellation terms in the official service before you pay.

How often is the YKI test held?+

Finnish and Swedish intermediate exams run several times a year; basic and advanced levels and other languages are offered less frequently. Our exam dates page lists the sessions currently published by the official service.

Can I change my test level after registering?+

Not after the registration window closes. Decide your level before you book, ideally after sitting a timed mock at that level.

Exam day

What actually happens between arriving and going home.

How long does the exam day last?+

Typically four to five hours including identity checks and a break, though the schedule varies by test centre and level. The schedule you are given on the day is the one that counts.

What do I need to bring?+

Valid original photo identification and anything named in your invitation. Without accepted ID you cannot sit the test.

Can I use a dictionary or my phone?+

No. Dictionaries, notes, phones and smart watches are not permitted at your seat.

How does the speaking section work?+

You speak into a headset and your answers are recorded against a countdown, usually at the same time as everyone else in the room. Nobody prompts you or helps you finish a sentence, so silence is costly — a simple sentence completed beats an elegant one abandoned.

How many times does the listening audio play?+

A limited number of times, and it cannot be paused or rewound. If one word escapes you, stay with the speaker rather than stopping to decode it.

Results and what they are for

Waiting times, citizenship, employers and re-sits.

How long do YKI results take?+

Usually about two months from the test date. Plan any application deadline around that delay rather than assuming a fast turnaround.

Which level do I need for Finnish citizenship?+

For YKI, Migri accepts specified combinations of skill-level-3 results: speaking and writing, listening and writing, or reading and speaking. Citizenship eligibility involves other requirements too. Confirm the current accepted combinations and alternatives at migri.fi before you register; a YKIReady estimate does not meet the requirement.

Does the YKI certificate expire?+

The certificate itself does not carry an expiry date, but individual authorities and employers may have their own view on how recent a certificate should be. Ask the body that requires it.

Can I retake only the section I failed?+

No. Results are reported per section, but the exam is re-sat as a whole on a future test date.

What if I think my result is wrong?+

There is a formal rectification procedure with a short deadline. Check the terms in your results notification promptly, because the window closes quickly.

Preparing with YKIReady

How our mocks, drills and credits work.

Is YKIReady an official YKI service?+

No. YKIReady is independent and is not affiliated with Opetushallitus. Mocks are original timed YKI-style exercises, with generated listening speech and estimated results. The archive contains approximate candidate recollections, not official or complete papers. Only the official exam produces a certificate.

Can I try it for free?+

Yes. The free Readiness Check includes tasks from all four skills in about 30 minutes with a free account. Its level estimate uses reading/listening answers only; writing/speaking receive completion notes, not grades. The separate six-minute diagnostic is a quick practice estimate. Sample questions with explanations are publicly readable without signing in.

How do mock credits work?+

A full timed mock uses one credit and a single-section practice uses one section credit. Credits are bought in packs and are valid for six months from purchase.

Can I pause a mock and finish later?+

Yes. A mock in progress saves your answers, the section you are on and the time remaining, so you can pick it up on the same device later.

How realistic are the listening and speaking sections?+

Listening uses generated Finnish speech, not real exam recordings; its voices and difficulty can differ from the exam. Speaking uses microphone recording, a countdown and transcription, which can make recognition mistakes. Automated feedback is a practice aid, not assessment by an official YKI examiner.

How much preparation do I need before the real exam?+

It depends on your starting point far more than on the calendar. Our guide on preparation timelines breaks it down by level and weekly study hours.

Still unsure which level to sit?

Six minutes under the real clock tells you more than an afternoon of reading. The diagnostic is free.
