Registration is the part of the YKI process people underestimate. Places at popular test centres for Finnish at intermediate level can disappear within hours of the window opening, and there is no waiting list that will save you.
Where registration happens
All registration goes through the official service at yki.opintopolku.fi, run under the Finnish National Agency for Education. You choose the language, the level, the test date and the test centre, then pay online. No third party — including this site — can register you or reserve a place for you.
Fees, dates and rules are set by the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus). Always confirm the current details on yki.opintopolku.fi before you pay for anything.
Dates and how fast they go
Finnish at intermediate level is offered on several dates spread through the year, with basic and advanced level offered less often. Each test date has its own registration window that opens weeks in advance and closes on a fixed day — or earlier, as soon as places run out.
- Check the published date list well ahead and note the exact opening time of the registration window.
- Have your details and payment method ready before the window opens; the form is not long but the queue is real.
- Be flexible about the test centre. If Helsinki fills, a smaller city an hour away may still have places on the same date.
- If you miss the window, look at the next date immediately rather than waiting for cancellations.
Our live exam dates page mirrors the official registration feed so you can see upcoming sessions, levels and locations at a glance — then register on the official site.
What it costs
| Level | Typical fee |
|---|---|
| Basic (perustaso) | around €130 |
| Intermediate (keskitaso) | around €130 |
| Advanced (ylin taso) | around €180 |
The fee is paid at registration and is generally not refunded if you do not attend. Fees are reviewed periodically, so treat these as indicative and check the current figure before registering. A failed section means paying the full fee again for a later date — which is the practical argument for rehearsing first.
Before exam day
- You will receive an invitation with the exact address, start time and instructions. Read it — start times differ between centres.
- Bring official photo ID. Without valid identification you will not be admitted, and the fee is gone.
- Arrive early. Latecomers are generally not allowed in once the first section has started.
- Expect to leave your phone and bag outside the exam room. Dictionaries and notes are not allowed.
- The full exam takes most of a day with all four sections. Eat properly beforehand and plan for the whole block, not just the start time.
On the day
Sections run in sequence with their own timing, and the schedule is driven by the invigilators and the recordings, not by you. The speaking section happens in a language lab or on computers, often with many candidates recording simultaneously — it is noisy, and that is normal. Your recording captures your microphone, not the room.
Practical mindset advice that genuinely changes results: treat each section as a fresh start. A reading section that went badly has no effect on the writing section unless you carry it there. Candidates routinely misjudge their own performance in both directions.
After the exam
- Answers are rated centrally by trained assessors. This takes time — results are typically published around two months after the test date.
- You are notified when results are available and can view them in the online service; the certificate follows.
- The certificate shows a skill level for each of the four sections separately.
- If a section fell below the level tested, you can register for a future date and re-sit the whole exam. Individual sections cannot be repeated.
- If you believe an assessment is wrong, there is a formal rectification procedure with a deadline — check the terms in your results notification promptly, because the window is short.
A sensible sequence
Diagnostic first, then a full timed mock at the level you intend to take, then four to eight weeks on your weakest section, then registration when a date opens, then one more full mock roughly two weeks before the real thing. That order costs you the least money and the least lost time.
