YKI does not test rare words. It tests whether you can handle ordinary Finnish life in Finnish. That makes vocabulary study unusually predictable: a few hundred words across seven areas cover the overwhelming majority of tasks.
The topic areas that recur
| Area | Typical task | Words worth owning |
|---|---|---|
| Housing | Complaint to the housing company | vuokra, isännöitsijä, taloyhtiö, remontti, häiriö, vika |
| Health | Booking or describing a problem | ajanvaraus, terveyskeskus, oire, resepti, sairausloma |
| Work | Application, message to a colleague | työhakemus, työvuoro, palaveri, esihenkilö, koeaika |
| Transport | Delay, ticket, route | aikataulu, myöhästyä, liityntä, lippu, ruuhka |
| Studies | Course enquiry | hakea, kurssi, todistus, opintopiste, ilmoittautua |
| Services | Order, refund, contract | asiakaspalvelu, hyvitys, sopimus, irtisanoa, tilaus |
| Environment | Opinion text | kierrätys, ilmasto, jäte, kestävä, säästää |
Phrases beat single words
In writing and speaking, what wins marks is a small stock of ready structures you can deploy without thinking, so your attention is free for content. Learn these as whole units, not as grammar to assemble under pressure.
Otan yhteyttä, koska… — I am getting in touch because… Haluaisin tiedustella… — I would like to enquire… Minun mielestäni… — In my opinion… Toisaalta… toisaalta… — On one hand… on the other… Olisin kiitollinen, jos… — I would be grateful if… Valitettavasti en pysty… — Unfortunately I cannot…
Spoken Finnish is not written Finnish
Listening tasks use real speech, which drops letters and shortens pronouns. Recognising the spoken forms of words you already know in writing is often a bigger win than learning new words at all.
| Written | Spoken | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| minä olen | mä oon | I am |
| me menemme | me mennään | we go |
| ei ole | ei oo | is not |
| tuo / se on | toi / se on | that is |
| kuinka paljon | kuin paljo | how much |
How to actually learn them
- Pick one topic per week. Not seven at once.
- Collect words from real material — a letter you received, a news item — rather than a generic list.
- Write five sentences using them the same day. Production, not recognition.
- Reuse the same words in a spoken recording within 48 hours.
- Revisit the topic three weeks later, once, briefly.
Fees, dates and rules are set by the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus). Always confirm the current details on yki.opintopolku.fi before you pay for anything.
