Almost nobody fails YKI because of one missing grammar rule. People fail because of a handful of avoidable decisions made before and during the exam. Here are the ones that come up again and again.
1. Registering for the wrong level
The intermediate exam reports only levels 3 and 4. Perform below that and the certificate says so — it does not fall back to level 2. Sit a mock at your intended level before you pay.
2. Treating the speaking section like a conversation
You speak to a recorder against a countdown, not to a sympathetic person who will help you finish a sentence. Silence is the most expensive thing in the section. A simple sentence delivered fluently scores better than an elegant one abandoned halfway.
3. Writing far too much
Long answers are not better answers. Every extra sentence is another chance to make an error, and length is not what is assessed. Hit the required text type, cover the points asked, finish, and use the remaining minutes to read your text back.
4. Ignoring the text type in writing tasks
An informal message to a friend and a formal complaint to a housing company are scored partly on register. Writing a beautifully formal complaint to your friend, or a chatty note to an authority, loses marks the grammar cannot win back.
5. Waiting to understand every word in listening
Audio plays a limited number of times and never waits. If a word escapes you, let it go and stay with the speaker. Candidates who stop to decode one word typically lose the following three questions as well.
6. Reading every reading text word by word
Read the questions first, then scan for the part of the text that answers them. The section is a time-management test as much as a comprehension test.
7. Studying only what is comfortable
People practise the section they are already good at because it feels rewarding. Your certificate reports each section separately, so your weakest one is the one that defines your outcome.
8. Practising without a clock
Untimed practice trains a skill you will never use. Everything about YKI is compressed. Practise at exam speed or you will meet that speed for the first time on the day.
9. Learning vocabulary you will never need
YKI topics are everyday and working life: housing, health, transport, work, studies, services, free time, the environment. A hundred words from those areas that you can actually use beat a thousand you recognise.
10. Leaving answers blank
There is no penalty for a wrong answer and there is a guaranteed zero for an empty one. Answer everything, even in the last minute.
Did I answer every question, including the ones I skipped? Did my writing match the requested text type and reader? Did I finish every spoken answer, even weakly? Are my verbs in a consistent tense?
Fees, dates and rules are set by the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus). Always confirm the current details on yki.opintopolku.fi before you pay for anything.
Frequently asked questions
Is there negative marking in the YKI test?
No. A wrong answer scores the same as a blank one, so never leave a question empty.
Does writing more improve my YKI writing score?
No. Assessors look at whether you completed the task appropriately and communicated clearly. Extra length mostly adds extra mistakes.
What happens if I go silent in the speaking section?
The recording keeps running and the unfilled time counts against you. Say something simple rather than nothing.
