A level 3 text is often a list of short, separate sentences. A level 4 text links them together. Linking words are the cheapest way to show that difference: you can learn twenty of them in a week. Here they are, grouped by what they do.
Connectors by job
| Job | Connectors | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ordering points | ensinnäkin, toiseksi, lopuksi | Ensinnäkin asunto on halpa. |
| Adding | lisäksi, myös, sekä, ja vielä | Lisäksi se on lähellä koulua. |
| Contrast | mutta, toisaalta, kuitenkin, sen sijaan | Toisaalta matka töihin on pitkä. |
| Reason | koska, sillä, sen vuoksi, siksi | En voi tulla, koska olen töissä. |
| Result | joten, siksi, tämän takia | Bussi oli myöhässä, joten tulin taksilla. |
| Condition | jos, mikäli | Jos sinulla on aikaa, soita minulle. |
| Concession | vaikka, siitä huolimatta | Vaikka satoi, menimme ulos. |
| Concluding | yhteenvetona, kaiken kaikkiaan, siis | Kaiken kaikkiaan olen tyytyväinen. |
Word order traps
- Koska starts a clause with normal word order: …, koska minulla ei ole autoa.
- After Siksi the verb usually follows directly: Siksi en tullut.
- Kuitenkin usually sits second: Asunto oli kuitenkin liian kallis.
- Don't start a sentence with Ja or Mutta in formal texts. Use Lisäksi or Toisaalta instead.
Before and after
Asun Vantaalla. Asunto on pieni. Se on halpa. Matka töihin on pitkä. Haluan muuttaa.
Asun Vantaalla pienessä asunnossa. Vaikka asunto on halpa, matka töihin on pitkä, joten haluaisin muuttaa lähemmäs keskustaa.
The vocabulary is the same in both versions. Only the linking and one conditional changed, and the text now shows planning and reasoning — the qualities that set level 4 apart.
Frequently asked questions
How many connectors should one text have?
There is no quota. Aim for natural variety: three or four different connectors in a 120-word text reads well. The same one five times does not.
